18-006-UK Amplifier Harmonization between APP-6 and MIL-STD-2525 #496

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

Within APP-6(D) (1), MIL-STD-2525D, and MIL-STD-2525D Chg 1 (Jan 18) there are a number of amplifier fields that are not harmonized between the standards. There are also others that are not clearly defined.

There is limited amplifier field harmonization across the symbology standards: • Fields are specified chapter by chapter. • Descriptions for common fields varies throughout the standard. • Fields contain mixed uses, e.g. "Headquarters Staff Indicator/Offset Location /Direction of Movement Indicator" With the exception of control measures there are no field lengths specified for amplifier fields.

Graphical amplifier instructions are spread throughout the document making it difficult to implement.

Geographical Entity Codes: • There is no common amplifier field specified for the geographical entity code. • Not all symbol sets have a geographical entity code field available.

PROPOSED SOLUTION:

This SCP provides harmonization of amplifier fields across all APP-6(D)(1) chapters, (and if adopted MIL-STD-2525D Chg 1).

It specifies maximum field lengths for amplifiers providing guidance to implementers.

It simplifies the fields so each field has an individual concept. Eliminating mixed or conflicting guidance.

It provides the guidance for graphical amplifiers in chapter 1 only.

See Annex A - for the harmonized table of amplifier fields for inclusion into chapter 1. The rest of Annex A provides changes across all chapters to reflect the update to the harmonized table and the removal of any graphical amplifier instructions that have been relocated to chapter 1.
