Project Update 3-29-19 #18

For today, we've made quite a bit of progress, but aside from the midterms, did not fully meet all of the goals.

Matt was able to do batch processing with XSLT, however he is trying to figure out the transformations to be produced in .xhtml files, and not .xml files. Thus not fully finished. He also mostly had the idea of how to do a table of contents page for the transformations, but it needs some work. He will continue working on this for next session.

Ethan has been working on the schema and markup for the incredibly long poem. He believes he has finished the schema, and can move onto finishing the markup. He will finish up the poem, and start planning out how to use the SVG for the website.

While Kyle did upload his markup in time for the midterm, we do not have any idea if he did anything else for this week since he was unable to make it to today's meeting either. We will touch base with Kyle another day, see what he's done and what he's going to do for next time.

Nonetheless, we are in a solid position right now, and remain confident in our ability to complete our project. Looking forward to seeing what we manage to do for next week.

It's great that you guys are introducing XSLT and are starting to plan SVG integration. Even if you didn't quite reach your midterm goals, it sounds like you're well on your way to digging into analysis. What is off about the table of contents?

MJB288 commented 5 years ago

@sjw82 For the table of contents, I was struggling to get the filenames themselves as part of the xslt transformations. I managed to figure that out over the weekend (after the project update was put out), but one of the current problems is that it currently works based off of the output files being xml. It's a really simple fix, but first, I have to figure out how to address my other minor issue with batch processing and file extensions.

Even if your group did not meet all the midterm goals it seems like your project is making a steady progress. I checked out your website and I really like the layout and design. Excited to see how you implement SVG for your data!

I also looked at your website. My only criticism is that the busy, gold background image makes some of the text difficult to read. I like the box around "CATCH AND RELEASE" on your homepage; by (for lack of a better word) softening the gold background, it makes the text stand out better. The bold text also helps. But wherever you have non-bold text in one of those boxes that lets the background show through (henceforth "translucent boxes"), or bold text that isn't enclosed in a box, the contrast between the text and the background isn't stark enough, in my opinion. So I suggest (a) enclosing all text in boxes and making any text that's in a translucent box bold, or (b) enclosing all text in non-translucent boxes, or (c) changing the background.
