Etica.AI is concerned about long-term social & ethical implications of artificial intelligence on Africa/Latin America. Do it via grassroots acts in short-term
Currently, this is the proposal of what the Etica.ai is:
Etica.AI is at present a very small group of Latin Americans concerned with gathering information about the philosophy and the use of automation and artificial intelligence in which it privileges the human side of technology.
We are concerned about long-term problems: our current aim is to create the basis for the real group of people to have an idea of the dangers and especially the potential that automation and artificial intelligence can help them make the world a less hostile place.
Here are key points that make sense at the moment it is written:
It is a challenge at the international level, so do not be afraid
We have a problem here worldwide: few people deal with artificial intelligence beyond mere consumers. The field is even more restricted considering ethical and philosophical factors, because it requires multidisciplinary knowledge, and also imagination about what the future will be.
The point to keep in mind here is: it does not matter to appear difficult to convince other people to imagine that it is a problem of the country in which they live.
And this also implies for you who are reading. No need to be in a hurry or urgency, eventually everything will work out.
Beyond simplistic thinking and exaggerated news (even if news is possible)
Programmers: Not everything is solved with code. (it is better to have a multidisciplinary reason)
Journalists and activists: not everything is solved with news or social movement (there has to be stability beyond punctual situations)
People who vote: everything is not solved by choosing a politician (because politicians may be forced to act in the same way, not because of corruption, but because the people want simple solutions)
Everyone, even those you disagree with, may be trying their best to solve a problem, the way they think it is the best way. A stable way to help a system (whether it be a simulation of individuals in society, or a real society) is to improve communication.
Here in Etica.AI, at least at the moment, it seems to be a win-win to improve communication with people and reduce noise. It does not mean that you can not act, if you believe it's important, do it! It's only worth it in the long run to improve networking that does not think or work with the same thing you already do.
Encourage professionals in beyond computer science
At least outside of big companies that already work with research in artificial intelligence, a good part of the interested ones will be people who work with information technology. That is to say that it is important to approach people who work in areas that require attention to philosophy and ethics in artificial intelligence and there would be no incentive without the Etica.AI exist.
If you are willing to bring someone to join us, or you have been invited to approach our small group and do not understand much about computers, but understand people, do not be discouraged even if you do not see colleagues in the same area of work interested.
Beyond government and non-govt/non-profit: Social Enterprise and Social Innovation
Usually people who would be interested in this type of Ethics.AI would be government people, NGOs or universities. Another point we seek is to encourage forms of entrepreneurship that have social responsibility and can be sustainable without relying on government money or donations.
