FTL Travel #21

More of a discussion than an issue.

After the races FTL seems like the next thematic mechanic to tackle. Sadly none of the 4 in Stellaris match up with how hyperspace works in B5.

IIRC in B5 the jumpgates opened up the vortex between normal and hyperspace. The gates created a signal network in hyperspace. Fall off the beacon path and you get lost foreverrrrr..... During the time the show took place all major races could build new gates and all their capital military ships can create their own jump points, but still had to follow the beacon path. There is also a bit of story and conflict when EA leased jump tech from the centauri until they figured out how to build it themselves.

If we can figure out how to code new ftl mechanics, crossing the wormhole station with the hyperlanes would do the trick, but I greped through the lua scripts and I think ftl is hard coded. We can fiddle with galaxy generation, technology, ship components and events for a thematic progression.

What is your vision for this mod? Are you looking to focus on recreating the events in B5, an alternate "history" simulator (like paradoxes other games), or just reskinning stellaris with b5 races and tech?

Hi! So far i will stick to only cosmetic and minor mechanic changes. So far my thought goes to adding babylon station and start creating events around it, so it will be a starting point of larger mod.

A new type of FTL looks interesting - Wormholes+HS, when you enter wormhole your ships will arrive only at destination star, but movement route wil still be restricted to hyperspace. On positve it will get rid of 'attack and run' technique. There is also interesting moment about battles in hyperspace. There was very close realization of it in StarControl2, where hyperspace was second plane of reality.

I'm wondering if we should just limit everyone to a universal hyperspace (or warp) environment or should each race have it's own engine tech? It's my understanding that all the races (old empires excluded) in the B5 universe have all the same engine tech. Yes, it's technically a hybrid between warp and hyperspace, but for the sake of the mod, we should work with what we have.
