Ideas:

overvoltage protection on VBUS and/or PMID
microcontroller that disables HVDCP_EN and MAXC_EN on power-up (possible race condition?)
separate boost controller from battery (copy design from superpower-rpi)

fixed in cm4 branch; the radxa cm3 version uses the CM3's built-in battery charger (in theory)
