Are the candidates paid for the week of their work?

Having worked for last 10 years, I can say with 100% certainty you're just extracting free labour.

Hi,

We follow strict ethical code.

Please be aware this is how we are testing ability & not an extraction of labour.

We believe to see talent, you need to show us you are capable of working on projects on our level.

So be aware it is not paid as it is an assessment.

If we decide to take on any of the code we will make you aware and pay accordingly.

Kind regards, Eve Lab

I see no evidence of that on any of the documentation of this project and on https://www.reddit.com/r/recruitinghell/comments/1dqx924/company_showed_email_of_all_candidates_and/ (though the OP obscured the email, so apologies if you did mention compensation there). There are other ways of "testing ability"; for instance, by giving a portion of the task or a timed technical examination (such as LeetCode-styled questions, perhaps like the front-end assessment tasks HackerRank offers).

This is not how it works, sorry. I've taken a few take-home tests in the past, and in almost every case, the workload requested was fair and reasonable. While I'm not too familiar with front-end development, this doesn't appear to be appropriate in terms of workload.

We value the concern and feedback. We will make amendments to making the compensation scheme clearer today.

However, as stated earlier, this was purposefully made challenging & heavy on the workload. We aren’t looking for people who shy away from a challenge.

Kind regards, Eve Lab

Then you need to pay the candidates for any reasonable effort. Simple as that. This is a first-stage test that you're giving, and the workload needs to reflect it. At the moment I think you're filtering for desperation, not ability.

Maybe look at how other companies do this, who manage to select able candidates without making the process feel like free work?
