toss up between PIR http://www.glolab.com/pirparts/infrared.html with something like HC-SR501 (range is around 7 meters) or HC-SR505 (range is around 3 - 4 meters) the SR505 is smaller and uses less power

outside of passive infrared ultrasonic would be the other option with devices such as the HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Module Distance Sensors. HC-SR04 sensor work best from 2cm – 400 cm (1" - 13ft) within a 30 degree cone

in either case they are inexpensive enough and may be of value to have on each side...
