How excellent are the people who have abandoned sweet dreams, withdrawing from 
that for which they erected their feet for. Standing up to fatigue themselves 
in the dark, seeking a portion of the blessing. When the night comes they stand 
up, and when the day arrives they derive lessons from it. When they look at 
their faults they seek forgiveness, and when they think about their sins they 
cry and feel dejected. O’ dwelling of the beloved, where are your 
inhabitants? O’ places of sincerity, where are your residents? O’ spot of 
the pious, where are your people? O’ places of nightly prayer, where are your 
vistors? I have, by Allaah, traveled around and found these people extinct. 
Those who used to stay awake at night have gone away and the lovers of sleep 
are left. These times have sought eating the lust to replace fasting.

Ibn al-Madini said to Abu al-Waleed at-Tayyalisi:

‘What excuse do you have in front of Allaah, and what will you use as 
evidence if you stand in front of Him and you left off raising your hands 
before and after Ruku?’

So Abu al-Waleed began raising his hands after eighty years of not having done 
so!’

Imam Malik ibn Anas -Rahimullaah- (d. 179 A.H.)  said:

«لو لقي الله رجل بملء الأرض ذنوباً ثم لقي 
الله بالسنة لكان في الجنة مع النبيين 
والصديقين والشهداء والصالحين وحسن أولئك 
رفيقاً».

‘If a person meets Allaah with the equivalent of the earth in sins, but 
meets[1] Allaah while upon the Sunnah, then he will be in Paradise with the 
Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, the righteous and how excellent are these

استوصوا بأهل السنة خيرا فإنهم غرباء

8 – From Sufyaan ath-Thawree -Rahimullaah- who said:

إذا بلغك عن رجل بالمشرق صاحب سنة وآخر 
بالمغرب فابعث إليهما بالسلام وادع لهما ما

‘If it is conveyed to you that there is a man in the east who is a man upon 
the Sunnah and another in the west then send Salam to them, with gentleness to 
them, since the Ahl-ul-Sunnah are few.’

9 – Imam Ahmad -Rahimullaah- said at the end of his letter which he sent to 
Imam Musadad bin Musarhad -Rahimullaah:

أحبوا أهل السنة على ما كان منهم . أماتنا 
الله وإياكم على السنة والجماعة ، ورزقنا 
الله وإياكم اتباع العلم . ووفقنا وإياكم لما 
يحبه ويرضاه

‘Love the Ahl-ul-Sunnah for what is with them. May Allaah cause us and you to 
die upon the Sunnah wal Jammah, may Allaah grant us and you to follow 
knowledge. May Allaah give us and you success in that which He loves and is 
pleased with.’[3]

Dhahabi mentioned it in the biography of Nafi’a bin Jubayr (d. 99 A.H.) Seera 
4/542.

It was also collected by Ibn ‘Aasakir in ‘Tareekh Damishq’ and the 
wording is

‘Whoever does not attend a Janazah except so that the people can see him, 
then he should not attend it.’
