Oops, forgot to send a screenshot of the popup I'm talking about:
P.S. Would it be easier to put a "I can not write in this language" box somewhere?
ALSO: remember that a user may have more than one target language, so under their profile it might say:
Target Language 1 Target Language 2
etc.
Ok.
I think the problems we've had today are twofold: 1) I've been looking at the unchanging figma this whole time 2) it's a Founders & Coders thing to 'challenge assumptions', and as such I've never written a 'storyboard' of how I thought screens would move.
I'm glad that Founders and Coders forced me to challenge my own assumptions, which included asking a lot of information of users up front. HOWEVER, this language popup is lacking. I think also because we don't have the terminology to talk about translation.
WHAT THIS NEEDS:
-There should be at least two of these popups, one for the source language (always English in our case), and at least one more for the target language. This information will go into the user's left-hand side of the 'mission control'- their user profile. Presumably there would be a way to see full profile information somewhere. Presumable the information on 'mission control' is just a summary. ANYWAY...
Popup 1:
Tell us some details about your English (At Twig, English is your 'source language', the language you're translating from.)
I'm a native speaker/mothertongue I have tested at upper-intermediate or advanced level I have completed university or professional training in this language I'm self-taught
Popup 2:
Target Language 1: Tell us some details about your target language 1. (At Twig, your target language/s are the language/s you're translating to.)
I'm a native speaker/mothertongue I have tested at upper-intermediate or advanced level I have completed university or professional training in this language I'm self-taught
Can you tell us the approximate latitude and longitude where your accent and dialect are from, or where patients speaking this language would live? We are trying to classify your accent with a geographic place in the world. In future this will help medical professionals match patients with the proper translation. lattitude longitude
___ Would you like to answer some questions about your experience with patients that speak this language?
I realize this is a lot for a popup. If a user clicks on "Would you like to answer some questions about your experience with patients... then it takes them to the 5-6 patient questions I've given you.
ALSO: If a user doesn't fill out the latitude and longitude question, it's bad. Very bad. In future doctors will probably match patients to translations from the area the patient comes from. A doctor has no way of knowing what kind of Arabic a patient speaks from a dropdown tab of 7,000 languages. He/she knows where their patient comes from.
