What are you changing?

Synonyms within the subject ontology. A general check should be performed.

Why are you suggesting this change?

We have many synonyms, of which some are very similar and/or not in our style. These should be reconciled and cleaned up.

We will more tightly scope the labels and synonyms such that we only show those that are substantially different from the primary label.

A summary of changes relating to this ticket follows. Please note these changes were made to ensure clean hierarchies and searching. Originally we thought having a number of synonyms would be helpful for searching and browsing (as that is what this application ontology was designed for). Practical experience has taught us that the only synonyms we need are those that are substantially different.

  1. Removal of NCIT synonyms EXCEPT:
    • Biomedical Engineering (synonym of Bioengineering)
    • Nanoscale Science (syn of Nanotechnology)
    • Clinical Informatics, Health Informatics (both syn of Medical Informatics)
    • Computation Biology (syn of Bioinformatics)

    • Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine (syn of Critical Care Medicine)
    • Ear, nose and throat medicine (syn of Otolaryngology)
    • Pulmonary Medicine (syn of Respiratory Medicine)
  2. Removal of most re3data synonyms EXCEPT:
    • Agricultural and Food Process Engineering (syn of Agricultural Engineering)
