What kind of single chip microcomputer and controller are used?

They used an ESP8266 12F microcontroller manufactured by Espressif Systems, though ESP8266 12F units from other manufacturers should work just fine. In general, they're dirt cheap. Just make sure it can be programmed using Arduino IDE.
