Numerous locations throughout the game produce incorrect visuals, seemingly related to background scrolling.
Note the disjointed propeller on the airship.
The lava floor here is supposed to slant downward towards Eggman, but it rises to cover most of the view when he's on the right and doesn't rise at all when he's on the left. The first screenshot is hard to interpret because Sonic is dead and the floor is Z-fighting with the background.
This isn't all of them, another location where similar stuff happens is the collapsing building in Launch Base Zone Act 2, which causes the floor to scroll as well as the building. There are probably others I didn't pick up on as well.
