Should data analysis be aware of (specialized to) the discretization's field (basis)? Or, should middleware subsample?

On this note, I've recently started treating postprocessing of higher order data as a scattered data interpolation problem using polyharmonic spline RBFs. Solving the resulting systems with SVD has the nice bonus of averaging out discontinuities/multivaluedness at DG faces.
