Make ASAN work on Appveyor #378

We disabled ASAN on Appveyor in PR #377.

There are some comments in the PR with suggestions for workarounds / fixes. These should be explored so that we can re-enable ASAN.

Resurrected previous branch to work from/with.

We have decided not to use the Ubuntu build on Appveyor. I'm closing this issue as Won't Fix, unless we plan to reinstate the Appveyor Linux build.
