I think that error was always there. Not a valid case but shouldn't error

reworked the PR a bit. I think how your hot fix has it is more correct. Just don't propagate anything if we aren't applying an aura. Passing bad data is worse than not doing. Prevent future issues. No need for the console output though since documented what is going on
