This may require time / energy.

One possible implementation would be a "Grow" command, e.g.

Grow Armor
Grow Spikes
Grow Roots
Grow Skin (for camouflage / color changing)

etc.

ooh i have an idea, the trees create oxygen

now the critters no longer need spacesuits which take up energy
