I've run 2to3 on the mdk directory, then fixed errors as I tried each of the commands, until I stopped getting errors.

It's entirely possible that there are still breaking changes from python 3 that I haven't encountered; I'm happy to take a closer look if necessary.

Thanks @christianp and sorry for the delay. This branch, in almost its entirety, merged into the branch py3.
