@cdent's Tank distinguishes between private/protected/public, each with its own icon (which is used wherever the tank is listed):

The definitions of the various permissions styles in tank are described here but originally come from hoster. There's also an fa-wrench
icon for any policy that doesn't match the three pre-made types. I suspect there may be more emerging as other styles become common.
You may have seen that I made policies comparable which makes answering the "what type of policy is this" question a bit easier.
As you note, the real trick in all this is coming up with a good tool for managing policies. I don't think any of the previous attempts have quite nailed it.
