currently it's only possible to choose between public and private when creating a wiki, which raises a few issues:

• it's not entirely clear (to users) what "private" means, exactly
• owners have no UI for altering permissions afterwards
• there's no UI for adding additional users to a private wiki

@cdent's Tank distinguishes between private/protected/public, each with its own icon (which is used wherever the tank is listed):

not sure about the details within Tank, but for us this could mean:

• private: only the owner has access (r/w)
• protected: access (r/w) shared across a group of users
• public: access (r/w?) for anyone

however, it's probably inevitable for r/w to be handled separately - which might look like this:

The definitions of the various permissions styles in tank are described here but originally come from hoster. There's also an fa-wrench icon for any policy that doesn't match the three pre-made types. I suspect there may be more emerging as other styles become common.

You may have seen that I made policies comparable which makes answering the "what type of policy is this" question a bit easier.

As you note, the real trick in all this is coming up with a good tool for managing policies. I don't think any of the previous attempts have quite nailed it.
