Reorganize navigation bar with dropdown menus #118

Closed jwflory closed 4 years ago

Summary

Reorganize site navigation bar to fit more options via dropdown menus

Background

In FOSSRIT/fossrit.github.io#85, @ct-martin added a calendar page. It would be nice to add this to the navigation bar to make it more visible. However, the navigation bar is at capacity for what it can display. To mitigate, we should add dropdown sub-menus to existing options to accommodate more space and tie some things together.

Details

Here is the breadcrumb structure I would like to see for the navigation bar:

Outcome

Make new pages on the website more visible

To be clear, this doesn't show on desktop but is noticeable on tablet.

@jwflory would it make sense to have About be the submenu or Get Involved?

Not sure I follow. A dropdown menu could only show on a mobile web interface but not the full desktop build? It would help if you could expand on why this is not possible.

I want About to be the sub-menu to be a catch-all for things generally about FOSS@RIT. LibreCorps doesn't have clear ways to get involved; the events have already happened; only one project is current, the rest are historical. In this case, I want Get Involved to be its own separate page where we have clear calls-to-action on how someone at RIT can join up.

Sorry, I meant the current issue of running out of space doesn't show on desktop due to having extra screen width, not that a drop-down won't work (which was the proposed solution). This note was in case someone else starts to look into it

This got bumped in priority for other website changes intended later this week. I'm starting to look into this, hope to have a fix by Wednesday or Thursday.
