Make README more helpful, add contributing guidelines #42

This is mostly a docs update. It makes the README a little more expansive and also adds a GitHub-friendly CONTRIBUTING.md file. This way, anyone that makes a new pull request to the repo is prompted to review the contributing guidelines first, where we have some helpful tips for them.
