Domain name for Paris #1

For the moment, the domain name is coded as PAR-3, following the current trend of naming CORDEX domains with 3 capital letters for ESGF. All domains seem to follow this rule, e.g. in CORDEX continental domains (MENA was compacted to MNA): https://github.com/ESGF/config/blob/44ba5f5df09c45800029325623b035a422fa18aa/publisher-configs/ini/esg.cordex.ini#L29

Or in the FPS-CONV: https://github.com/ESGF/config/blob/44ba5f5df09c45800029325623b035a422fa18aa/publisher-configs/ini/esg.cordex-fpsconv.ini#L29

However, as domains become smaller, many more names are required and, without the hint of being continent names, 3-letter acronyms become cryptic and less useful. @MartinaSt, do you know if there is any higher-level restriction on domain names in ESGF? or any string passed as domain_option in the files above would work?

In such a case, we could consider PARIS-3 as domain name, or even Paris-3, if not case restriction is in place.

There is no restriction to three letter acronyms for the domains but as domains are part of the DRS and become a facet in ESGF they should not get too long. Some city names will need an abbreviation.

I suggest to keep the length of the domain including resolution <= 16 characters, which was used for source_id in CMIP6. If you need two characters for the resolution plus one for the '-', you would have max. 13 letters left for the city names. The full name can always become a global attribute in the file header. The DRS components should remain compact but I agree they should not become cryptic.

Please also remember the allowed characters: a-z, A-Z, 0-9 and the hyphen (“-”) .
