question about prop blacklists #318

how do i blacklist props but allow admins to spawn them.

FPtje commented 1 year ago

That is not supported. There's a good reason for this: when you don't apply limits to admins, the tendency is for admins to set the limits so high that the game becomes unplayable for anyone but themselves. After all, the ones with control over the limits don't notice how annoying the limits are.

thats a dumb reason, that should just be up to the owner

Dumb? You've managed to hit one of the very few design decisions that has years of experience and discussions behind them. Time and time again admins have proven to recklessly press a "no limit for me!" button the moment they see it, before then turning the limits up to 11.

Prop blacklists are a particularly good one, where they would turn on the whitelist, and pick only a handful of props. You basically cannot spawn anything useful while your admin around the corner is building their biggest base yet. It's not only there, though. Antispam would be set to like 5 seconds per prop. When asking about this, the admin says "I don't even notice it, stop complaining".

Respawn times have been set to 90 seconds because they didn't apply to admins. DarkRP arrest times have also been set to 5 full minutes for that reason.

There are only a few cases where it makes sense to have no limits for admins. In those cases, admins need it for their main task: administrating. Being able to pick up another player's props is an example of that.

Going back to the statement of it being dumb, I'd like to invite you to exercise your brain a bit. I challenge you to think of a really good reason why limits should not apply to admins. What really sets admins apart from the other players? And how far should we go with that, should we give admins better weapons, aimbots, infinite money? Should we do this stuff in all games that you play, or only in GMod, where you get to be in a position of power?
