Dear students,

Welcome to the seminar 'Critical Social Media Analysis using Mixed Methods'. In the following email, we would like to give you an understanding of how we are going to organize this seminar this winter term.

In the seminar, you will learn

about the field of social media research and its methodologies how to design a scientific investigation into online communities, social debates and controversies how to explore and collect material and data for social media analysis how to use machine learning for the analysis of social media data about ways to do qualitative research on social media communities and debates how to differentiate and/or combine quantitative and qualitative approaches to analysis about ethical and legal aspects within social media analysis how to conduct 'open data science' ensuring accessibility, transparency and accountability of your research elements and results Last but not least, you will get a better understanding of the two thematic focus areas of the seminar: how people create and debate controversies about 1. climate change and 2. the corona virus on digital media platforms and YouTube in particular.

The sessions will consist of a mix of lectures, discussions, guest talks and project work. During the semester, you will design and develop your own analytical project in a small team with fellow students. The rated assignments of the seminar include a presentation and report describing your analytical team project.
