Since it is difficult to ensure no information is lost from the 63 commits in master ahead of this branch and it is easier to convert existing configurations to the new schema, a new branch from current head of master called refactor_attr is created. This PR is now being closed to be replaced by a PR by the branch refactor_attr to master.
