I don't know if it is much an issue or a feature, I am interested in having another aspect of control over thumbnails so I will actually see if I can use this to improve the items appearance.
I was having a hard time correcting the reflecting seam on the brim of the riot helmet. Turns out the gloss causes the reflection issue on this item. I noticed though, by accident, that one file I submitted was orange like dusk. I realized thumbnails show the light related to the time slider when you submit through the rust workshop.
Bringing this up cause it's an exiting discovery, and want to let people know for future submissions to work with the issue rather than fight it.
If it is easy to clear up and improves thumbnail appearance that would be awesome. Thumbnails really make or break an item, so much to the point I change my files and select my ideas based on how they are going to appear in the set thumbnail.
