Cannot set 3:2 resolutions with -w and -h #1358

I'm playing on Ubuntu 14.04 on a Chromebook Pixel with a 3:2 2560x1700 display. As most 3:2 resolutions are not an option in the game GUI, I have tried manually setting the -w and -h command line parameters in order to force resolutions, but no matter what I do the game simply uses the closest 4:3 resolution instead. This results in stretched content.

Does it work in other Source Engine/Valve games?

Yes, when I launch Counter-Strike: Source it automatically uses the correct resolution and also offers the resolution in the video settings if I am not already on it. Choosing the resolution actually renders at that resolution. As for Garry's Mod, using any 3:2 resolution with the -w and -h command line parameters only puts the game in the closest 4:3 resolution.

Counter-Strike: Source at 2560x1700

Counter-Strike: Source also offers other valid 3:2 resolution choices for me such as 1440x960 and 720x480 (the rest of the resolutions offered to me in the screenshot are 16:10).

Do you need any more information (e.g. Garry's Mod console logs or screenshots) to help you debug this issue?
