Kinect makes GMOD crash #2748

Details

If I try to use Kinect with Gmod, the game crashes. So if I click on the "Show Video Box" or "Control with Motion Sensor" button it freezes for a few seconds and exits without an error message. The only sign of the crash is the crash file. It says: "The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access." Here's the crashfile: crashfile.zip I have tried uninstalling every Kinect relevant thing (SDK, Runtime, drivers etc.) then rebooting and reinstalling the SDK and Runtime (1.8, I have also tried 1.6 too) and after that plugging the Kinect in - Gmod crashed again. Addons can't cause the problem, because I have also deleted all of them and it didn't fix it.

Steps to reproduce

By clicking "Show Video Box" in the menu or "Control with Motion Sensor" in a ragdoll's menu. It only worked if the Kinect was functional. If it didn't work (flashing light on it), the crash didn't happen. The buttons were there but didn't do nothing.

UPDATE: I have found a weird way to make this work, even though it's merely a fix. So I was playing around and accidentally it just started to work! These are the steps I have done:

The problem with this is, that even though you can use Kinect with the ragdoll, it's really unstable. So you can't spawn down anything, can't choose an other tool and can't even go to the menu, because it will crash. I was trying for hours to find the exact steps to reproduce this, so I hope this can help to fix the crash

It's fixed! Looks like Gmod didn't like my integrated video card, because with a new card it works great

I've tried everything from what is guy is doing but it seems like GMod likes to crash on both multiplayer and single player gmod. As well with downloading both 1.6 and 1.8 sdk/runtime versions of the kinect. And it apparently still crashes regardless what version you're using. I'm currently running Windows 7 Professional.

You have some sort of overlay software that causes stability issues for you.

cakehm commented 6 years ago

Whoops, wrong dump file. I was messing around with the other builds of Garry's Mod and wanted to check to see if it affected by those. Here is my real dump file. hl2_170801_crash_2017_9_28T18_41_3C0.zip

Can you make it happen on the Dev branch and attach a dump from that?

cakehm commented 6 years ago

Okay, so I tried launching GMod with the dev branch and it seems crashed upon starting with the kinect. I've disabled the two commands to enable -noborder and windowed mode just to make sure it wasn't me multitasking or anything like that. Here is the dump file. hl2_2117156_crash_2017_9_29T7_52_7C0.zip

Again, that crash seems to be caused by the discord overlay.

cakehm commented 6 years ago

Well I just went ahead and disabled the overlay, tried to spawn a ragdoll and the game crashed yet again as it did on the stable branch. Here is the dump: hl2_170926_crash_2017_9_29T8_2_13C0.zip
