Is this intentional and would that make 1.0 the only stable release?

It is intentional, the new version is completely different from the previous one (visually) as it targets the new refreshed Adwaita theme and because there still may be issues, we didn't release it as stable yet. Once we find it good enough, we will make a stable release with version 1.1.
