items to remove from Hydrocraft (Suggestions) #15

Have just been playing HC for the first time in a long time, thought I'd suggest here any items that I find that I don't think add any value.

Will add more items as I see them in game.

HCSpatula & HCWoodenspatula, spatula is a vanilla item, so why do we need these? Can also remove the recipe: Carve Wooden Spatula

HCDutchoven, not used for anything. Maybe it could be made useful for something? I like the idea of simple food recipes, something like 'Make Rabbit Casserole' which takes various ingredients and makes a meal, without needing to add 6 ingredients & then spices. So you could just walk to a fridge, run the recipe, and put the result in the oven - because I am that lazy. :D The Dutch Oven might be useful for something like that, but do we want to add more recipes for food just because I'm lazy? Probably not.

UmbrellaOpen & UmbrellaClosed - Maybe HC added them before they were vanilla? As they are in vanilla, so no need to add them again.

Most of the jams, i think 4 would be enough (Strawberry, Blackberry, Blueberry, & Marmlade (orange) would be my suggestion)

I think it would be interesting to edit the forage items above to be limited to a single month, but have them be abundant during that one month - kind of like how berry season works in Stardew Valley.

The jams, along with most food items, also need to be made to use the calorie code I wrote - I can't remember where it is, but its in Hydrocraft somewhere.

Solar panels & associated items. Other mods do it better.

Jello & associated items / recipes.

HC flash lights, they're in vanilla so why add more? Other mods do it better for anyone that wants a wider variety.

recipe: Carve Wooden Bowl

Just watching someone play PZ (not Hydrocraft) and they're crafting bowls on day 1 from a plank, and while HC makes it a bit harder it still feels way to easy.

Maybe replace with a recipe that uses clay & a kiln.

All the items in HC_Floors.txt can go, and the recipes can be changed to have the result be the vanilla item rather than a HC version that looks like the vanilla item.

For example, HCFinewoodfloor has a WorldObjectSprite value of "floors_interior_tilesandwood_01_45" Just change the recipe Make Finewood Floor to: Result: Moveables.floors_interior_tilesandwood_01_45,

I'll try and get the change done soon, probably best to look around the map for all the carpets & floors while I'm at it.

Edit: done the carpets, I've left the 1 wooden floor, we may or may not want to craft all 41 floor tiles.

Recipe: Brush Teeth (x2)

Controversial? The Toy Wagon was, in my opinion, better before the animation was added - your character looks wooden & robotic, your equipped weapon does show in your hand & it doesn't show when you swing.

So, we could just remove the change?

I know someone worked hard on it, and the wagon looks good, but I think it makes Hydrocraft worse than it was before.

Also, while I'm on this topic, the Toy Wagon is insanely OP, a couple of ideas on how to nerf it:

Edit: maybe RequiresEquippedBothHands = true, so you can't fight while using it?

HC_Food Tupperware.txt

The food items are just broken - food is supposed to rot, magic items that make it last for longer (15 days!) is cheating. The food items also provide no nutrition, so your weight will drop like a stone using them - although we could fix that, but I don't think its worth it.

For a mod I made for myself, I added the ability to convert containers between liquid & storage, that might be worth doing - so tupperware can be used to gather rain, or converted to storage mode and used to store items.

Recipe: Make Charcoal

There are 17 (!) recipes, I think we could reduce this down to just 1. IIRC, the vanilla recipe is 5 logs to get 2 bags - we could just use the same and get rid of the rest.

It would be nice if charcoal took time to make, which could easilt be done using the rot mechanic - not sure what the ingredients would be though (just logs + something to start a fire?).

Random idea: could we make a the 'burning charcoal' item too heavy to pick up, and spawn it inside the kiln, so you can't do anything with it until it rots. Then have the item created by replace on rotten be the charcoal? (or an item that can be turned into charcoal via a recipe, e.g. Remove Charcoal, which requires a shovel.) I might test this, it would be more interesting, to me at least, if you couldn't just make charcoal in a few minutes.

update: it works. The only slight issue is that OnCreate has to scan the 9 tiles around the player to find the kiln, which will cause a problem if the player builds 2 or more kilns close together. A 1 tile gap will work if the player is only stood adjacent to 1 kiln, a 2 tile gap prevents the problem entirely.

Sleeping bags, they don't work & other mods add ones that do.

HC_Locksmithing.txt

HugoQwerty commented 3 months ago

Menthol & light cigarettes, cigarette butts too - although I do know someone who used to collect them, man is chain smoker in PZ.

HugoQwerty commented 3 months ago

HC guns, other mods do guns much better.

Baby food?

Crafting twine from grass/straw, always felt way too strong - some sort of tech/skill progression, even if just collecting supplies from a warehouse & growing a crop (cotton?, hemp?) to process, would feel more appropriate. I'd go further and make stick traps not give the twine back when they break, so players have to keep crafting it, but I suspect most people wouldn't like that.

Same goes from crafting rope, just combining sheet ropes feels way to easy.

Berries & Mushrooms, they're in vanilla, & you magically know whether they are safe to eat or not (or that they will be safe if you just cook them). Maybe keep some of of the berries, e.g. the ones that 90% of people would recognise (e.g. Gooseberry), but even then it doesn't really add anything - unless used in a recipe like jam.
