Measurements do not match #7

Hi,
I know you love my bug posts. Here's another.
I just modeled and cut a 2"x3"x3" box and exported the SVG into Illustrator.
The sizes looked good, but the notches on the short sides are all a little
different. The bottom and top are perfect. The dimensions are correct in
Sketchup. The box does go together, but it's a bit of a puzzle.
I have attached the .skp, .svg, and a pic of the final box.

Hi Chris,

Sorry for not responding sooner - I was expecting Google Code to send me an
email if
there was an issue was logged (and I just happened to be browsing through and
saw
this issue right now).

To tackle the problem, I numbered the sides in Sketchup (different to you). I
then
exported to SVG and then aligned everything at 0.1mm line width in Inkscape -
it all
seems fine in the SVG file. I can double check in Illustrator by grabbing an
evaluation version.

I just need to ask a couple of questions (and throw a theory in):

* For the side pieces - did you cut the same piece 4 times? Looking at the SVG
file
in Inkscape I noticed that they differ just a little bit - something not
apparent in
the SketchUp UI as it rounds on-screen measurements and is problematic
especially
when using inches (compare the inches and metric screen shots). Damn imperial
units
to hell! Not Google though, it's so hard to get angry with them when they give
tools
away for free.

If this is not the issue, then:

* Did you use any further templates once in Illustrator?

* Could you post the Illustrator file so that I can compare with Inkscape?

* What's the thickness and tolerace of the material you're cutting? I'm
guessing that
it's 2mm/0.08in thick?

------

That about all the info I think I need. Thanks for your continued support ;-P

P.S. I'm still working on your other Mac issue too (the trouble is finding one
for
testing).

I use precise measurements in Ills all day. I make silk screened picture frames
and
cut them with a laser at work. They keep measurements very well.

* Could you post the Illustrator file so that I can compare with Inkscape?
I posted the SVG because I was working with that natively. What version/format
would
you like me to convert it to?

* What's the thickness and tolerace of the material you're cutting? I'm
guessing that
it's 2mm/0.08in thick?
I was using .08 acrylic.

Hope that helps.

Hi Chris,

I just need the exact file that you sent to the laser cutter - I'm guessing
that it
wasn't the SVG you posted because it has no numbering like your cube. SVG or AI
format for the cube with numbering would help a lot - you can email it if you
don't
want to post it.

Thanks for your help - sorry for my anti-imperial units rant ;-P

Here is the Ills file I sent to Corel. I organized it and made some common
cutting
lines. From there it was placed in the right spot and printed with no editing
in Corel.

Most the measurements match except for the side notches on the squares.

Thanks for the file Chris,

I had a look and it's definitely something that happened inside Illustrator as
opposed to the plugin - I took your original SVG file and overlayed the pieces
on to
the AI file you posted. Only 3 of the pieces actually match up (I even rotated
the
pieces to double check). The imported pieces are pink in the file.

Basically it means that the original SVG export was fine but the workflow
inside of
Illustrator produced defects in the side pieces. I've put together a rough
guide of
what the pieces should have looked like under your blue pieces.

I suspect that when snapping pieces back into place after deleting shared
edges, the
positioning that Illustrator wanted did not match the actual position they
should
have been in (look especially at the last piece). This was probably exacerbated
because Sketchup showed the pieces to be fairly symmetrical, when in fact they
were
not (Sketchup was rounding). Have a look at the pictures I have posted (in
inches ;-P
), just changing the precision factor under window->model info->units. It shows
that
the pieces were slightly different.

Let me know what you think, hopefully you'll be able to find out exactly what
went
wrong (Illustrator is not my forte).

Thanks for your help (good luck with the bench).

I see the problem. Basically I made the model wrong, the plugin exported it
perfectly, and then I cut the model wrong. Input garbage, output garbage.
Maybe a bit more info on accurate Sketchup units would be helpful.
I'll try and make another box proper this time.

No problem, I'll close the issue and make a wiki entry about SketchUp units.
