For the heat eq. tutorial (with Tetrahedrons instead) I get this with the current code:

if I use the first output from Metis so I think it is correct as is and we want to use the iperm
.
perm
from Metis is the permutation so that A[perm, perm]
. This would correspond to something like perm[i]
is the new dof i
. When we do the renumbering we want the inverse so that we can lookup the new dof number easily, e.g. we want to map dof i
to perm[i]
so thats why we use the inverse permutation from Metis.

Ahh, that makes sense. Good idea to add the clarification comment :)
From the looks of it FerriteMetis uses the
iperm
rather than theperm
.In Ferrite
Metis.Permutation
is called as followshttps://github.com/Ferrite-FEM/Ferrite.jl/blob/84d46003118b415bf0f023995b359a9c228df553/ext/FerriteMetis.jl#L90
But Metis.jl it looks as
Metis.Permutation
returns the the permutation as the first output and the iperm as the second.https://github.com/JuliaSparse/Metis.jl/blob/0ff1f9bcf1d5e5e9efa6f5903cf89df986e1f674/src/Metis.jl#L184
The
iperm
is still a permutation, but it will most likely result in large fill-in. There seems to be no tests for fill-in, which might be the reason that this was not caught.
