Consider providing an option - either on the interface or, more simply, via an environment option - to specify the raster file output format. Currently this is png, but some might prefer jpg for example.
You can use the environment option biorec.imageformat to set the output image file extension to one of those supported by QGIS, e.g. jpg, tif, bmp or png. Png is the default if option is not set.
