FOCUS v1.0 Discounts Execution Plan

🎯 Goal

Define the columns and attributes necessary to support discounts.

For 1.0, we’ll target the following types of discounts:

• Negotiated and volume discounts
• Tiered discounts and included quantity
• Commitment-based discounts (committed usage or cost/spend)
• Interruptible workloads (e.g., spot)

We will not cover:

• Bundled discounts (discounts for service A when you use service B)
• Free and preview service discounts / pre-GA pricing
• Credits and refunds

📖 Scenarios

For 1.0, we’ll target the following scenarios:

• Verify discounts are being applied correctly
• Calculate total savings
• Commitment chargeback
• Commitment utilization
• Commitment planning (price changes after expiration)
• View usage by tier (P2)

We will not cover:

• Invoice recon
• Calculate savings per discount type
• Commitment break-even point
• Commitment coverage
• Commitment swapping
• Commitment floating/lineage/recon
• Amortization of all one-time and recurring purchases
• Identify free/preview services and plan ahead for GA price changes
• Identify current and available bundled discounts

We will not cover the following columns:

• AmortizationPeriod – The period that a purchase should be amortized within.
• DiscountDetails – Additional details about other discounts applied to a row.
• CommitmentQuantity – Normalized amount of a commitment that works for both committed usage and committed cost. Simplifies utilization calculation across commitment types.
• CommitmentNormalizationRate – Multiplier used to calculate the effective quantity after accounting for instance size flexibility.
• NormalizedCommitmentQuantity – Normalized amount of a commitment after factoring in instance size flexibility.
