Is this project still alive? #250

Still considered beta with last commit about a year ago certainly doesn't look like it.

Any pointers to alternative approaches / best practices?

Probably https://firebase.google.com/docs/firestore/security/get-started I guess Firestore is supposed to replace Firebase even though it might not officially be deprecated.

This project is in "maintenance mode". We'll accept PR requests, but it was always a beta project and we no longer have the engineers to staff any improvements.

Which kind of reads "you were never supposed to use it in the first place". Too bad
