Any chance the pre-rendered Cutscenes will ever work? #4

After hearing that Proton now improved Media Playback I had High Hopes not needing to rename the EPIC Folder anymore. But nope it's still a black screen and then a crash which kinda annoys me but it is what it is. I just want to know if you might have an idea to get this to work. I watched some youtube videos where people completely ditched Proton-GE and just used Proton and manually mfinstall and mfinstall-cab I tried that without success there are some other ideas in my head like trying to reencode those mp4 files cause I can't manage to play all of them in VLC Player for Final Mix only the Intro plays and the rest of them fail to play in vlc player so I gotta try re encoding

It's...tricky. We know for sure that in the latest Proton and ProtonGE cutscenes renders now, but without sound, so something is clearly changing. I honestly dunno how, since it's been some time that I've watched the wine changelog and checked the commits.

It is a matter of time tho, so you can just go ahead, update and try to play the game everytime there's an update

from what I understand the issue with the FMVS for the legacy KH games is that the pre-rendered cutscenes even if they play run on directx11 and switch to directx12 when gameplay starts which results in a crash but like what FlaareZero said "its only a matter of time"

Mind if i ask how to do that? I'll take sound over nothing lol

@FlaareZero With which version? I just tried again with Proton GE 7.38 and it's still a black screen without video or audio (tested in the theater mode of Re:CoM).

So here's my situation so far

Proton 7.0 - automatically crashes on prerendered cutscenes (Re: Com voiced cutscenes+Intro to KH1&KH2)

Proton Experimental - allows for audio during cutscenes however will automatically fail on attempting to return to gameplay even if skipped along with weird audio

ProtonGE-42 and below - will fail for audio and video but will play them and allow for skipping but will crash on entering gameplay

ProtonGE-43 - video fails audio plays with 0 problems however will fail to enter gameplay every time

I don't believe we'll get cutscenes playing with ProtonGE-44 however I believe we'll get in and out of cutscenes after skipping/ watching the black screen with videos

when it comes to the video I do think that we'll manage to get it running soon with the advancements in FFmpeg so that we can encode the video to a format that we can watch on the deck but as it stands ProtonGE will simply get the audio but it will still struggle on the change from direct11 to 12 so it will crash. so I think that we should wait till the next GE release but for now, I will try and see if I can just replace the file names and just download the cutscenes from online and see if they'll run in the cutscene launcher for fun but I do believe it will crash regardless

TLDR; wait for ProtonGE-44 and you might get the black screen to gameplay allowing for KH2 Lingering will and to know when to start the youtube video for Re: COM It sucks but i think it's just a matter of time

I was actually wrong in the last comment the chances are higher that the video will actually start playing rather than gameplay starting after the cutscenes. ProtonGE-44 will probably have better support for windows media as a whole and will allow for the videos and fmv's to play but direct x 12 to 11 and back will be later down the line

On GE-8 theoretically it should be fixed. Let me know just so I can update the guide :)

I will be testing this on my end right now.

EDIT: The game still lacks video, but audio from FMVs play. Skipping them works as intended but results in a crash every time.

Since you can't skip the final cutscenein in the vanilla version of the game, you're very prone to crashing if you don't have your "EPIC" folder renamed to "EPIC.bak".

The newest version of Re:Fined is planned to add an option to skip the final FMV scene to allow for a clear data save for KH2.

As of today, though, audio is still missing on the cutscenes. I believe we're more less likely to have crashes now, but it needs more investigations.

When my Steam Deck arrives in the weekend, and when I have some free time, I'll check it out :)

Looking forward to hearing how it goes. I've been hoping for this to be fixed for a long time

The games are coming to steam finally https://www.square-enix-games.com/en_GB/news/kingdom-hearts-pc, here's hoping Valve or Square fixes this issue so they can get steam deck verified :]

FlaareZero commented 2 months ago

As of today (28/06/2024) you can just download the Steam version and play all the games there on your Steam deck :)

Should be the same thing if you want to pirate the Steam version, so... I guess it was fixed by square itself? :D
