Main Ideas:
Initially, we decided to explore the relationship between the two variables by plotting them against each other. We explored different types of plots:
What we tried out:
It appears that there is an association between the two variables (i.e., SRH and DeprIndex), namely that as deprivation decreases, self-reported health improves (which is intuitive). However, by plotting the relationship between these two variables using a line plot, we seem to miss out on important information > we need to take into consideration that SRH is a categorical variable.
We explored sex differences between men and women, but did not really find any (visually) intriguing differences.
We also looked at SRH and mental well-being. Again, we tried plotting a scatter plot first but that did not seem to be an appropriate visualization option. A line plot seemed easier to interpret.
Another interesting thing we decided to do was explore several different variables plotted against the different categories of SRH. The variables that we decided to plot were 1) mental well-being, 2) deprivation index, and 3) gender. We did realize that, because the different variables have different measurement scales, we could not visualize them with a line plot (for multiple categorical variables displayed on the x axis) > aggregation/standardization might be needed?
A further idea: to add social exclusion as a potentially important factor to consider alongside deprivation and visualize all variables considered previously alongside social exclusion using a point plot.
We played around with different colours and widths in the process.
Initial Ideas:
Think about how to best visualise relationship between Self-Reported Health (SRH) and Deprivation Index (carrying on from yesterday)
Look at the relationship between SRH and Mental Wellbeing
Look at the relationship between Mental Wellbeing and Social Exclusion Index
