Just noticed that there seems to be the same issue with 'pleurum' and 'ventral thorax' terms (again, no disambiguation).
Looks like pleurum should probably exclude the sternum, but this is not mentioned in our terms and there is little-no external sternum in the meso-/meta- thorax.
As far as I can tell: 'dorsal prothorax' == 'prothoracic tergum' == 'pronotum' 'dorsal mesothorax' == 'mesothoracic tergum' 'dorsal metathorax' == 'metathoracic tergum'
All seem to refer to the dorsal exterior part of their respective segments with no disambiguation.
It is possible that the dorsal thorax terms were created to encompass hairs, folds, etc. whereas the tergum terms might perhaps be supposed to just represent the plates, but this is not clarified and these extra features are currently modeled as being part_of the tergum anyway (as with other integumentary plates/regions). I think trying to make this distinction is probably not necessary and likely to lead to more confusion and maintenance overhead than it is worth.
I would like to merge these sets of terms and use pronotum, mesonotum and metanotum as names (as 'notum' seems to be more commonly used than 'tergum' in drosophila literature), keeping others as synonyms.
