Serial gateway fixes #61

Fixed bugs in the serial gateway code that were introduced during plugin conversion to Python 3.

Can you do an issue with a description of the errors to link this to?

Looks good. You can tell I don't have any way to test serial control.

LOL, yeah. :-) I was happily running version 7.x for the longest time because it did everything I needed. But now I need to move to Indigo 2023 because our Fusion Research streaming server hit EOL and is getting replaced by an Apple TV, requiring a Python 3 plugin.
