NIRv work

• Work by Oliver, Jen, and Grayson - PAR -> NIRv shows promise, particularly at intermediate timescales (not hourly or annual, but everything in between)
• Bartlett and Vancouver Island sites
• Light by itself accounts for 2/3 of variance, more so at evergreen site
• These would be available for comparison with Rs and GPP, but also to go back in time
• Next step: talk to Dennis

Must be coincident? Yes. All measurements must be timestamped.

Jen points out two related things here: comparison of methods vs. extrapolation across space and time - uncertainty propagation.

• GPP
• Observations to challenge models (e.g. dark partitioning methods)
• Tower GPP is a model-data fusion product, not a pure observation, and we need ways to evaluate them
• Value of 'ancillary' measurements - we could quantify to some degree
• For a site, we need at a minimum annual numbers, and ideally daily
• Potential for a parallel paper comparing Decagon vs. broadband (Sonnentag, Goulden, Baldocchi sites) - nested with hyperspectral
• Implications for f and phi and CUE
• What about modeling? How will this fit? Grayson points out we need a more in-depth discussion about this

Sites

HF, MMS, Howland, Bartlett, UMBS, SOBS?, Mer Bleue, Rodrigo Vargas site?, tropical site? BCI/Manaus (Matteo - Oliver)?

Everything needs to have a tower; almost all should have soil respiration and Rh; we'd really like NIRv and Rh. That's basically our core set.

Note there is money to support students to work on these problems at LBNL BBL: Stephanie? Jinshi?

Trevor said they have extra funds to bring students/ECRs to workshop a particular topic. Like for a week. Good internships for undergrads and grad students; but could support a postdoc for some time period.

Aspirational deadlines:

• Review - background on GPP methods, uncertainties; Jen could lead -> how to position this
• By AGU - core sites identified and primary data collected or outreach initiated
• Sit down at AGU for an hour and go over progress
• End of January - GPP distribution figure for all sites, PEcAn results?, schedule discussion
• Mid-March, results from second wave of analyses, begin to prep manuscript
• End of May - ms submission
