This is what I had in mind

(this may break image loading for any images used in the program, because the image loader works by scanning the flat command list -- let me finish changing the display system around over the next few weeks, since that will probably eliminate the display list anyway, and then we can think about how you want to do this)

Sure happy to close and revisit. Mostly the idea was to show sending a program to the display
