Scaled down to smaller body, to fit Vietnamese inBBox #1

@davelab6, @alexeiva, @kalapi, @impallari

Pablo noticed that BBox of SigmarOne was far too large. This is due to the Vietnamese accents, but also because the original design was drawn very large on a small body. I tried to make the Western and Vietnamese accents smaller to be sure they wouldn’t be cropped, but that was an impossible task.

I made a testversion in which I scaled down the typeface the body larger. I changed the UPM from 1,000 to 800 and added 200 units to the vertical metrics. This is a trick I could do with SigmarOne, because it is a rough typeface. The quality didn’t suffer.

The problem with this trick is, that the type size is now 25% smaller on the same body. If you would update/push this, people will notice it :)

Is it possible now to readjust the x-height on lowercase 25% higher, and leave the Caps as they are? This may be a lot of extra work, but just a suggestion.

alexeiva commented 8 years ago

If not, as @davelab6 suggested — pushing under a new URL, SigmarTwo etc..

davelab6 commented 8 years ago

@alexeiva new family names ought to be avoided where possible, we are trying to fix fonts that are in use, not make new ones :) @kalapi is going to investigate vertical metrics in the next 3 work days and let us know his recommendations on Wednesday July 13th

Start
-Highest glyph: Odieresismacron (946.0)
-Lowest glyph: Odieresismacron (-19.0)
-BBox: (965.0)
End

On a side note, I find the accents in the original font too massive, this could be a 'design' issue. And Tbar, tbar may have too large horizontal bars, no?

Accents are indeed massive in the original. But that was the designers' choice and this font was chosen to be only expanded.

Tbar and tbar were already in it. We could make some changes on the accents, but that would mean doing more than intended.

If we are going to do similar changes to other fonts, we should first define what the work during an expansion should and could be.

As I've stated in mostly all of my posts, the original designer's accents are way wayyy too big for a Vietnamese normal eyes. Just by looking at the above screenshot make me really don't want to use this typeface in Vietnamese because the accents are just too big. Especially when put together, the circumflex are too big compared to the acute or grave etc... And then look at the Aacute, this acute is also way too big... Imagine they're put together in a sentence, that'd be simply... ugly, at least for Vietnamese.
