10 months ago As part of capacity building, I want us to revisit the idea of creating a Citizen Forestry Service.
Seed & Seedling Unit:
- host a certification course at our BoO
- expand out our Certified tree seed collection team by at least 12 to include our staff, plus the 4 folks from Delphi, Kate (mom of our junior fundraiser), Andrea P. from forest therapy Ottawa. Creating and owning the plan for seed forecasting, collecting, stratification, and starting.
- address all the steps involved in certified nursery
- expand relationship with Ferguson & Baker nurseries
Tree Planting & Tree Care Unit:
- a growing team of volunteers that both plant and care for sites
- Pop-up courses in our target neighbourhoods on how to plant trees properly
- Expand on our water delivery and watering of sites story
- Proper scheduling of site visits / monitoring
Data collection Unit:
- team dedicated to gathering info on sites & tree health that inform our 365 reports, get updated in dashboard
- look at adding all of the stats that the Neighbourwoods program tracks (so that when trees are larger, team has skills)
- this information feeds back into seed/seedling unit when we create sites that have new stands of particular species of trees, they become future sites to collect seed from
- should include necessary gear to creating high quality maps / inventory (such as a set of GPS units), so we can eventually get to a "per tree" coordinates (instead of "per site")

The focus of activities under any proposal for Capacity Building should primarily be related to:
capacity building to encourage and facilitate involvement in planning and undertaking tree planting, including knowledge building and transfer, training and outreach;
capacity building related to management, protection, and monitoring of trees and forests, including knowledge building and transfer, training, and outreach; and
planting and management of trees and forests as part of capacity building.
This is also interesting to note:
The 2BT program will prioritize capacity building projects that includes a concrete plan for new work (rather than implementing existing activities) and demonstrates that the funded activities will directly support future 2BT planting activities.
For example, the 2BT program has previously funded capacity-building projects that:
Included pilot tree planting projects led by organizations with relevant or related experience or partnerships that can test and refine strategies for a future project that could be funded under 2BT.
Addressed local supply chain issues (e.g., seed collection).
Addressed specific barriers to participating in future 2BT funded projects, or that made an existing plan actionable. For example:
Increased knowledge and participation in tree planting activities through targeted outreach and engagement efforts (e.g., training, creating jobs, and building community relationships), rather than general informational or awareness campaigns.
