What can it be used for?

Matrix is An open network for secure, decentralized communication. It is growing quite fast and has a lot of potential.

There are icons for Telegram (fa-telegram), Whatsapp (fa-whatsapp), Facebook Messenger (fa-facebook-messenger). Matrix needs one.

Icon request checklist

[x] I have included at least one example image if it could be helpful (optional)
[x] The request is for a concrete object (it's harder to make an icon to represent happiness, it's easier to make a smiley face. ☺)

Back when this was suggested it probably wasn't that essential but now the whole Fediverse stuff is moving faster and faster, especially with the rise of Mastodon. The Matrix protocol is definitely picking up a lot of momentum at the moment with people either moving away from Discord or bridging between the two as a truly viable open source Discord replacement so it would be great if this could pick up support to have it added.

Matrix user, Font Awesome Pro subscriber, and recently installed Managing Director of the Matrix.org Foundation here – I'd also love to have this in Font Awesome.

If concerns over trademark or copyright are an issue: I will gladly work with you to address those!

Editing to add, in case it helps, that there are now 115 million Matrix users on the open federation and it's seeing official use by the governments of France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the UK, and has been adopted by Mozilla, W3C, Debian, KDE, GNOME, OpenBao, and more. There's definitely an audience for this even beyond diehard geeks :)
