I like your variant more but I would say it's probably a design choice. However adding it as an additional icon would make sense and I would like to see that too.

Adding new variants (instead of replacing the current user icons with a bottomless version) will be expensive. I don't think FontAwesome will take that road🤷‍♂️.

I find a few user icons that don't have the bottom line:

Some icons need more care than just removing the bottom line.

Why would it be expensive? I mean the fact that other icons dont have that line makes sense to just replace the current icon instead of adding a new one. But some people might like that bottom line so having an option open would be nice too.

In those icons there would not be much to maintain really. And if one icon changes then it shouldn't be that hard to change one more too.

Hey folks, this is an interesting idea, and I'll discuss it with the team. As @babakfp mentioned, we'd need to update ALL of the user-based icons in the thin style... possibly in the regular + light styles, as well. Making a variant doesn't make a ton of sense to me, because we'd need to also make a LOT of variants, plus a version that works in the solid style. Not impossible, but I don't know that it would add much.

This is a quick update to let folks know that we’re refining our icon request workflow behind the scenes, and as part of that we’re going through all open requests and filing them into several new buckets to be addressed.

In this case we’ve added this issue to our new list to be created! We can’t promise any firm timelines right now, but this will help us keep track of it.

We’ll update this issue when the icon is released into the wild 🙂
