FreeDesktop icon naming specification / alternate names for font-awesome icons #6272

Open SylvainCorlay opened 9 years ago

SylvainCorlay commented 9 years ago

There is a "standard" specification for icon naming http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html which is used in multiple front-end frameworks like Qt and GTK. And in KDE.

Someone willing to implement a standard icon theme for these platforms based on qtawesome would have to follow this naming convention.

Having an alternate set of names for font-awesome icons (available in the icons.yml file) following this specification would really help people adopt font-awesome for desktop applications.

:+1: I would like to use this in my Qt application. That would be great.

See also #6159, seems someone took the effort to establish a mapping, but I could not find it yet.

In regard of https://github.com/qooxdoo/qooxdoo/issues/10001, I would like to map the 225 Icons from the +10 years old Tango / Oxygen iconsets following (an older version of) the icon naming spec to similar ones from Font-Awesome or Material icons.

Here is a nice visual overview of what needs to be mapped following above spec: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_icon_sets
