Consider "retain input roots" flag for simplification #126

it seems that we should be able to keep the info about the roots in the simplification state, then re-use them the next time we simplify, etc..

Will kick this one down the road a while. #138 has some insight for the future, and #142 has some functions that should be useful. When revisiting, it'll be useful to write a test to check that the idea in this comment is viable or not.
