X20pro low RSSI with TW GR8 #22

Open BarryWA opened 7 months ago

BarryWA commented 7 months ago

My new X20 pro only shows a maximum RSSI of 74 with a TWGR8 RX. It shows 100 with a GR8 RX. The RSSI with the TWGR8 drops to about 60 on range check, relatively close, so it does change. I have tried this with two different TWGR8 receivers with the same result. All current firmware on TX and RX.

I have carefully checked all RF module settings and believe them to be correct. I also have an X20S, the X20S RSSI reads 100 with the same TWGR8 RX. Seems to point to firmware issue in the X20pro, but it is the current version 1.4.17 updated with ETHOS suite.

Please advise. Thank you

Answer after CNY as it is not an Ethos issue!

The German Frsky distributor has received this information from Frsky development a week ago:

Regarding the low RSSI value displayed Lora in blackbox, that it is due to the fact that the maximum signal strength of the RF chip can only be 76 after improving the gain control. It should not be the case that the Lora mode is obviously shorter than the FSK in the range test. If the radio and RF software are both updated to the latest, it is likely to be a hardware problem. Intests, whether in range test or full-power mode, Lora's distance should be better than FSK. In the latest TW product software, the RSSI and VFR parameters of FSK and Lora have been merged. Except in the blackbox function, other menu should not be able to read the separate FSK and Lora signal data.

Would be good if Frsky will include this information in the TW manuals

I had the same issue with one of my TW GR8. All have the same firmware v1.0.8 and x20 pro with 1.1.12 for the HF module.

At 30cm of the Tx, i get 75db whereas with the others, i get 100db.

Please check the green (fsk) and blue (lora) led on rx, they should be both ON. The rx with the 75db has the blue led OFF, meaning that the lora link is not working (as per manual). It has been changed by the vendor and the new one is ok. There is also a batch of rx where the green led has been replaced for an orange one but it is less than barely visible. You have to remove the case to see if the led is lighted or not.

After reading through the replies, I decided to check all 4 of the receivers. I initially had one of the four receivers that was DOA and was replaced by HorusRC. The other three seemed to bind OK and I busied myself setting up my F5J models for the change from OTX to ETHOS ( I like ETHOS very much BTW).

When checking all 4 receivers, I took a different route trying to isolate the problem. First I moved the TX a meter away from the model. For the first test the TX was next to the model. I found that one of the four receivers ( I believe the replacement ) read a full 100 RSSI at one meter distance on the X20PRO. On initial setup of the models, I copied models from the S to the PRO using “Smart Share” and simply placing the model .bin files in the models folder, worked perfectly. I checked to verify that all the RF settings were the same, slightly different settings for the Internal v. External module.

I then bound the same 100 RSSI F5J model/receiver to the X20S; again the X20S read 100 RSSI. I then bound the same model in the TX (not the physical model) that showed 100 to be sure all RF settings would be the same. Each of the remaining three receivers showed 74 RSSI with the X20 pro and about 84 with X20S, external TW module. External module set at 100mw, the internal was also verified at 100mw. I did check the bind lights during initial setup, but as others have noticed, the blue light does dominate, but the green light is visible.

It appears that something has changed in the RX with one of the receivers showing the full 100 RSSI with the X20S and the X20 pro. All receivers have the same current firmware, both transmitters have the current firmware. I did range check and fly using the X20S and the range check was excellent, with the lower RSSI, though I didn’t range out very far. I now believe that the issue is with a change in the TW GR8 receivers. I will check with FrSky about replacement receivers.

Relieved that the X20pro seems fine.

Did you check the black box data of thr receivers? With the most actual firmare 1.0.8 for the TW GR8 the blackbox data now shows the min and max values for RSSI and VFR seperate for FSK and LoRa. Maybe that‘s helpful.

Thank you for the suggestion. I've been reading the top bar RSSI. I just setup logs and recorded, but only find data for one 2.4. Did another search for sensors with no luck.

If I understand the moderator, "Answer after CNY as it is not an Ethos issue!" This issue should be closed on Github. I'll check elsewhere; thanks

Currently the transmitted value for RSSI which is shown in the top bar and the range chack screen is a combination of FSK and LoRa RSSI. Frsky dev will provide a new firmware the will transmit RSSI for the two RF bands seperately. See here https://github.com/FrSkyRC/RF_Feedback_Group/issues/29

Thank you very much for the information and link. Good to know that separate RSSI numbers are coming.

Explains why I can’t find a separate LoRa RSSI ;)

Happy flying

I had the same issue of lower than expected rssi reported back on a new TW GR8 rssi 75db. After I updated the receiver FW to 1.0.8 The TX telemetry then reported 100db rssi.

BarryWA commented 6 months ago

Thank you the information. I am away from home for a week, but will check firmware. My memory is that I updated to 1.07; 1.08 is the latest.
