Having those shorter abbreviations is important for displaying contest and candidate names compactly in a variety of forms and reports. Probably best to allow the user to define rewrite rules. This might work better as support even via command-line tools which work on the Candidate and Contest manifests, and give feedback on maximum length after applying the given rewrite rules (as well as errors when there are duplicate names generated).
At a minimum, for a demo, we need to be able to see the entire contest name for some interesting contests. That might be via better test data, or via rewrite rules, or via a wider page.
Attached are all the contest names for sample even and odd years in Colorado: 2015-contests.txt 2016-contests.txt
Most of the raw names are less than about 70 characters, but they range up to 102 characters.

I can't distinguish among the contests in dominion-clear-creek-CVR_Export_20160713143950.zip with the given width, and I can't make the "define new audit" window wider.
Here is the longest I've seen yet:
But we may also want to provide shorter abbreviations for these, and remappings, since they sometimes either don't match across counties, or don't have enough information (e.g. the
MAYOR
contest last year in Adams county....)
