Suggestions for a new name #7

Closed felixrabe closed 10 years ago

felixrabe commented 10 years ago

If for some reason this project had to change its name, what should it be?

This issue is not a competition (so no need for "I like X suggested by Y") - if there is a need for a new name, this list can be used as basis for a competition.

FalseCrypt

felixrabe commented 10 years ago

NewCrypt – suggested by @tigerhawkvok in https://github.com/FreeApophis/TrueCrypt/issues/2#issuecomment-44701075

tigerhawkvok commented 10 years ago

LibreCrypt would also have overtones of forking, as LibreOffice vs. OpenOffice and LibreSSL vs. OpenSSL (though I admit the fact "Libre" is two syllables makes it not as elegant to say)

JamesSwift commented 10 years ago

For now, how about TempCrypt?

TheCrypterFormerkNownAsTrueCrypt (TCFNATC) or as a tribute the SHA of the version 7.1a Source "253990adb669324b57a731f70770cd95d08c18d7"

felixrabe commented 10 years ago

@t541hoo - the name may not contain "TrueCrypt" ;-) - but your suggestion made me think of something - I wonder whether the SHA1 of "TrueCrypt" would be illegal (as it "contains" the name "TrueCrypt") ;-)

doekbrijder commented 10 years ago

unfortunately someone is holding librecrypt .com, .net and .org.... (someone you know?)

Vault17 commented 10 years ago

whois of librecrypt .net and librecrypt .org containin registred email and admin's email. librecrypt.ws is free.

P.S. OpenCrypt or FreeCrypt?

IMHO, TrustCrypt is really good name :)

doekbrijder commented 10 years ago

for these two the .com is also taken

tsumi commented 10 years ago

librecrypt.net/.org was registered on 28th and 29th... Same for OpenCrypt.org/.net, registered about a year ago

FreeCrypt.org/.net are FREE (for now).

I think a domain name with the exact name is needed too (yes, you can use something like librecyptfoundation.net but the existence of a librecypt.net not under your control can cause some problems, ie. misunderstanding/phishing/etc.).

Maybe someone should pre-register domain for nicest names ...

EDIT: TrustCrypt.org/.net/.com FREE too

doekbrijder commented 10 years ago

someone who favours this project and not his wallet... But we are working on it and hope a rename is not necessary...

tsumi commented 10 years ago

@doekbrijder yes, this is what i mean :), anyway, don't change the name should be a better choice, if possible

Vault17 commented 10 years ago

TrustCrypt - com, org, net is FREE for now. I think, that you should rename the project, because from this time the project has a new team and a new license.

tsumi commented 10 years ago

I just asking myself ... is a good choice use a .org/.net/.com/etc domain? They are partially under US legislation (see TVShack case https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_O%27Dwyer )

doekbrijder commented 10 years ago

plan to always use the .ch domain and just route the others

tsumi commented 10 years ago

@doekbrijder i'm not really sure that this is enough ... in TVShark case servers are not in US and the domain only "redirect" to servers in UK...

YtvwlD commented 10 years ago

Well, according to domai.nr some .pt domains are free...

felixrabe commented 10 years ago

Guys, domain name discussion is appreciated, but severely off-topic and actually way too early. We didn't even have a proper contest. And we won't have a contest before it has been decided to change the name of the project.

So keep suggesting cool names and save wallet-opening and domain-searching for later.

felixrabe commented 10 years ago

Actually sorry for confronting @doekbrijder who is actually a member of this project while I am not. But still, domain search is right now wasted time, (money,) and energy in my opinion.

t541hoo commented 10 years ago

@felixrabe : Just like Prince use only the abbreviation TCFNATC and you are save.

Fensterbank commented 10 years ago

FalseCrypt (suggested by @felixrabe) is a nice side blow to TrueCrypt, but it sounds not very trustful... ;) LibreCrypt I like too.

  1. CrossCrypt (Cross Platform Encryptor) (It'd have to support Linux, Windows, Mac)
  2. CPCrypt (Cross Platform Encryptor) (It'd have to support Linux, Windows, Mac)
rockking1379 commented 10 years ago

@br3akth3lim1t if it doesn't have Linux, Windows, and Mac support then we are doing the project an injustice

nwb99 commented 10 years ago

@rockking1379 TC is the only cross-platform tool that I've found.

rockking1379 commented 10 years ago

@br3akth3lim1t exactly, so if we are to continue the "truecrypt" project then cross-platform support is just a flat out requirement

Actually, i would consider LibreCrypt as the best choice. It's kinda like OpenOffice/LibreOffice (LOo>OOo). But OpenCrypt it still an excellent name, since the project will be Open, and it is actually beeing Openly Audited (the dev has not begin, so it's still Truecrypt 7.1a, which is beeing audited here : https://opencryptoaudit.org/ ) So in my opinion, LibreCrypt and OpenCrypt are the best choices.

strasharo commented 10 years ago

Yep, OpenCrypt sounds good. :)

BugBuster commented 10 years ago

There is a tiny problem with OpenCrypt name - there are at least 2 existing projects/products with this name. librecrypt.org is also already taken, but empty and I haven't checked who owns it, may be he is from TC community.

CryptOn

compul commented 10 years ago

I suggest to move away from *Crypt names, to create a distinct branding, instead of just the impression of a "truecrypt rescue mission". Thus my name suggestion is:

CipherShed

Since a few people on the "geekcrypt" mailing list liked it, somebody already bought it for the future project.

bking commented 10 years ago

CryptKeeper

Sonique commented 10 years ago

CryptOn sounds great and memorable. Good and simple.
