I understand the rationale you have outlined but to be honest this would be 'a nice to have'. Not having this capability has not slowed down entry of transcription data. The occurrences of such a situation has been infrequent in entering 70,000 plus entries.
I'm kind of conflicted here. Even as a nice to have I am pained by the specifics of an interface where the tab has a different action based on the previous items text. I am closing this since it has not been confirmed as important. If there is significant opinions that it is important this can be reopened.
It still doesn't remember any fields except the surname, which is a real pain. With common surnames you'll often get a whole series of Brians or Dorothys, for example. Having to type Elizabeth multiple times is no fun!
2 On the other hand, it therefore doesn't remember if the previous entry had more than one given name, so if you don't hit the space bar after the first name it always goes straight to mother's name regardless of what the previous entry had. A major benefit. [The ideal would be if it remembered all the fields, but wanted a space after the first name to go on to subsequent given names, a tab always taking it straight to mother's surname. If that's not possible I'd definitely prefer to have all fields remembered and put up with having to remember to blank out the occasional second given name.]
